The money tree is said to bring good luck, which makes it a popular gift for new homes and businesses. With glossy, hand-shaped leaves on a (usually braided) trunk, it's easy to care for and safe for pets.

Light + placement

Bright, indirect light is ideal; it tolerates medium light. Too much direct sun scorches the leaves, and too little makes it leggy and drop leaves. Rotate it every few weeks so it grows evenly.

Victoria tip: Money trees often drop a few leaves when they move into a new home or when our light fades in November. Keep it in one bright spot and it will settle.

Watering

Water thoroughly, then let the top 5 cm dry. The swollen trunk base stores water, so it's better under- than over-watered. Never let it sit in a saucer of water.

Soil + repotting

A well-draining mix like our Tropical Potting Mix in a pot with drainage. Repot every 2–3 years in spring.

Let us do it: Bring it in and we'll repot it for $1 per inch of pot ($2–$10), plus soil and a new pot if you need one. How to Repot a Houseplant

Feeding + upkeep

Feed monthly from April to September. Prune leggy stems in spring to keep it bushy. Dust the leaves occasionally.

About the braided trunk

Braided money trees are several young plants grown together. The braid doesn't grow further on its own. If you want to keep braiding, loosely weave new growth while it's flexible.
