Ficus altissima looks like a rubber tree with brighter, lighter leaves, often with lime or yellow veins (the variegated form is sold as 'Yellow Gem'). It's fast-growing, easygoing, and a great choice for a bright room.
Light + placement
Give it bright, indirect light, near an east, west or south window. A few hours of gentle sun keeps the leaf colour strong. In medium light it will grow, but more slowly and with duller colour.
Watering
Water thoroughly, then let the top 5 cm of soil dry out. Slightly drooping leaves mean it's ready for a drink. Water less in winter when growth slows.
Soil + repotting
Use a well-draining mix like our Tropical Potting Mix. Repot every 1β2 years in spring, one size up.
Feeding + upkeep
Feed every 2β4 weeks from April to September. Wipe the glossy leaves monthly. Prune in spring just above a leaf to keep it compact and encourage branches. Wear gloves for the sap.
Common problems
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow lower leaves | Overwatering | Let the soil dry more between waterings. |
| Leaves dropping after a move | Adjusting to a new spot | Keep it in one bright spot; it settles in a few weeks. |
| Dull, greener leaves | Not enough light | Move closer to a window. |
| Brown crispy edges | Dry heat or underwatering | Water more consistently; keep away from heaters. |
| Sticky leaves, small bumps on stems | Scale insects | Wipe off and treat with Houseplant Spray or neem. |

Frequently asked questions
How is altissima different from a rubber tree?
It's a different species with thinner, lighter leaves and coloured veins, but the care is almost identical.
Does it need direct sun?
Not required, but a little gentle sun gives the best colour.
Is it safe for pets?
No. Like all ficus, its sap can irritate a pet's mouth and stomach.
How fast does it grow?
Fast in a bright spot: several new leaves a month in summer.
