The dragon tree has spiky, thin leaves on slim, bendy canes, giving it a sculptural, modern look. It's slow, tough and happy with less light than most floor plants. 'Tricolor' and 'Colorama' add pink and cream stripes.

Light + placement

Medium to bright, indirect light is best. It will tolerate a lower-light spot, but growth slows and the striped varieties lose colour. Keep it out of hot direct afternoon sun, which bleaches the leaves.

Victoria tip: In Victoria, brown tips usually come from dry winter heat or uneven watering. Keep it at least a metre from baseboard heaters, and water evenly.

Watering

Water thoroughly, then let the top half of the soil dry out. Dracaenas are much more likely to suffer from too much water than too little. In winter, water even less.

Soil + repotting

A well-draining mix like our Tropical Potting Mix with a handful of perlite. Repot every 2–3 years in spring; they don't mind being snug.

Let us do it: Bring it in and we'll repot it for $1 per inch of pot ($2–$10), plus soil and a new pot if you need one. How to Repot a Houseplant

Feeding + upkeep

Feed monthly from April to September at half strength. Lower leaves yellowing and dropping one at a time is normal as the cane grows. If a cane gets too tall, cut it at any height in spring; it will sprout new heads below the cut, and you can root the top.

Common problems

Frequently asked questions

Can I cut the top off my dragon tree?

Yes. Cut the cane in spring at the height you want; it will branch below the cut, and the top can be rooted.

Why are the lower leaves falling off?

That's normal. Dracaena drop old lower leaves as the cane grows taller.

Is a dragon tree safe for pets?

No. It's toxic to cats and dogs if chewed.

Does it do well in low light?

It tolerates it, but grows slowly. Medium to bright indirect light is best.
