The name says it all. The cast iron plant handles low light, cool rooms, missed waterings and neglect better than almost anything. It's also safe for cats and dogs, which makes it one of our top picks for dark corners in pet homes.

Light + placement

Low to medium light is perfect: a north window, a hallway, or a few metres back from a brighter window. Direct sun scorches the leaves, leaving pale or brown patches. The speckled 'Milky Way' keeps its spots best in medium light.

Victoria tip: Cast iron plants are happy in cooler spots like an entryway or a bedroom with the heat turned down, which makes them great for Victoria's older, draftier homes.

Watering

Water thoroughly, then let the top half of the soil dry before watering again. They're slow growers and use little water, especially in winter. Soggy soil is the main thing that hurts them.

Soil + repotting

Any good, well-draining mix such as our Tropical Potting Mix. Very slow growing, so repot only every 3–4 years when it fills the pot.

Let us do it: Bring it in and we'll repot it for $1 per inch of pot ($2–$10), plus soil and a new pot if you need one. How to Repot a Houseplant

Feeding + upkeep

Feed a few times between April and September; it doesn't need much. Wipe the leaves every month or two. Cut old or damaged leaves at the soil line. Divide large clumps when repotting to make more plants.

Frequently asked questions

Is the cast iron plant safe for cats and dogs?

Yes. It's non-toxic. See Easy Pet-Safe Houseplants for more.

Can it live in a room with no windows?

It tolerates very low light better than most plants, but it still needs some light or a grow light.

How fast does it grow?

Slowly, just a few new leaves a year. That's why the bigger plants cost more.

How often should I water it?

Every 2–3 weeks, or when the top half of the soil is dry. Less in winter.
